Why does wilderness matter to you?

Wilderness was the only source of safety I felt as a child. I still feel safest in wild places.

Why does wilderness matter to your community?

We live by Nine Mile Canyon in Utah. It is a sacred place with ancient Americans lived. Many people enjoy the rock art and camping just like we do. Being in wilderness is a safety valve capable of bringing out the deepest and most positive feelings. It makes life better and worth living to experience nature alone and together with one's community.

Share a story about a special experience you have had in wilderness.

I was clinically depressed. My friend took me for a walk up Rock Canyon and left me alone for a while near the creek. When he came back I felt a little better and we went back to the apartment complex where we both lived. This experience was a turning point for me. I will be forever grateful to my friend who knew a wild place was just what I needed.

What are your hopes for the future of wilderness?

I hope we stop saying "Multi-use" for wilderness. We are running out of sacred spaces. I want to see more sacred wild places respected. I want wild places for children, future generations, and everyone. We don't know what others are thinking and feeling, but we all need wilderness to remind us there is beauty and goodness in the world.
